A bit about me…
I was always a bit lost on knowing what I wanted to do for a career but knew it was in the field of mental health. So at age 20 I finally decided I would study to be a counsellor.
Drugs and alcohol
The first two year of my studies I did a placement in alcohol and drug rehabilitation. Here, I learnt the complexities around addiction and the devastating effects it can have on people’s lives. I also learnt how powerful a supportive community can be to help people rebuild their lives in recovery. I was also encouraged to challenge my fear of running after group relaxations.
Children and young people
However, as part of my Counselling course I was also able to do a placement with children and young people, and personally this was something that peaked my interest.
So my next placement was at a children and young people’s mental health charity which I absolutely loved and was eventually offered a Trainee CBT Therapist position before becoming a qualified CBT Therapist, which was a big change from Counselling!
This is where I learnt the importance of taking a person centered approach to allow people to learn to make up their own minds and gain the confidence to trust themselves.
I also learnt how amazingly resilient children and young people are and the importance of allowing them the privacy to talk about things without being influenced by parents, teachers or other authority figures.
What I do now
I eventually moved on to a job with the wonderful NHS as a CBT Therapist seeing people aged 16+, which I still do part-time. Here I work in primary care where I treat common mental health problems such as the ones outlined on my ‘Treatment and Prices’ page.
More and more people are signing up to therapy and choosing to go private due to the long waiting lists of the NHS, and therapists are in high demand. After having my beautiful little baby at the start of 2023 I felt I wanted more flexibility to work from home and spend more time with my little one, as well as making myself available to the people who did not want to be on a long waitlist.
It is also very important to me to offer more affordable therapy, so that more people have access to private therapy should they need it. I also offer a reduced rate (Treatment and Prices page).
I love working with a variety of mental health problems to keep me on my toes and help me maintain experience in treating these presentations.
Most of all I love being part of each person’s journey as they work through their mental health problem and I get to witness them growing and reclaiming their lives. It honestly is the best feeling!
How I work
I am based in Bristol but also cover surrounding areas, and work with people aged 16+. I work with common mental health problems using Cognitve Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help you gain tools and techniques to break unhelpful patterns that maintain the mental health problem you are experiencing.
Even though it might not always feel like it, you are the expert in your own mental health. So initially you will need to teach me all about how your mental health works and any issues in your day to day life (don’t worry, I will help you with this!) Next, we put our heads together and form a treatment plan where it is my job to guide you through how to improve your mental health, based on research based protocols specifically targeting that mental health problem.
CBT is a collaborative approach which means we both work together to reach your goals. In our sessions together I will be your biggest cheerleader! I am a big believer in providing people with a safe and non-judgmental environment to help them thrive. I also really believe in encouraging autonomy, so right from the start I will be encouraging you to make your own decisions and help you take charge in your sessions so that it allows you to practice in a safe space to eventually help you mirror this in real life.
CBT is a structured proactive approach to therapy and I do love a good bit of structure and productiveness! Keeping to a structure allows us to stay on track and make the most out of your sessions, so you can start feeling better as soon as possible.
I am passionate about the work I do with people and feel so privileged to watch each person grow and move forwards with their lives.
